In social studies we have started our study of the Age of Exploration, when explorers from Europe crossed the Atlantic and began the colonization of the New World in the 15th and 16th centuries. To kick off Chapter 4, we have rearranged our room to create a "sunken ship." The students are working in pairs as archaeologists to uncover artifacts from the shipwreck, then using the text to investigate what each artifact is and why it was important to explorers. I love how so many of our students really embracing the idea of the sunken ship (many of them have been "swimming" to get each new artifact) and are really diving into the content (ouch). Be sure to ask your kiddos what they're learning!
