In social studies we have started our study of the Age of Exploration, when explorers from Europe crossed the Atlantic and began the colonization of the New World. To kick off Chapter 4, we rearranged our room to create a "sunken ship." The students worked in pairs as archaeologists to uncover artifacts from the shipwreck, then used the text to investigate what each artifact was and why it was important to explorers. I loved how so many of our students really embraced the idea of the sunken ship (many of them went "swimming" to get each new artifact) and that I wasn't the only one in scuba gear! Check the social studies section of the site for the Chapter 4 final project options...coming soon!
