Guest Bloggers!

10/28/2020

So you may have noticed that, although I really did have the best of intentions when I started this blog, my weekly updates have fallen by the wayside. Luckily for me, I have a classroom full of great writers who are always willing to help! So, the weekly update for last week, 10.19.20-10.23.20, is brought to you by guest bloggers Lyla and Manny. Read below to hear what our A-010ers have been up to! Then, check out the slideshow to see our fabulous fireflies in action around the pond. :)

Weekly Update from the Cardinals by Lyla and Manny

In morning meetings we play,“What’s new?” where we tell everybody what we had done the day before or the weekend. Every week we pick a poet and in the morning they read aloud to the class. One time I, Manny, was a poet and I felt really embarrassed. Right when we unpack we do our DCI ( daily check in), then we write in our agenda. That’s what we do in the morning meeting.
In social studies we are learning about Identity and landforms and geographic terms and of course we learned with cheesy videos. We learned the physical features of the United States, like the Great Basin and the Rocky Mountains. And also we had a debate about indigenous people day or Columbus Day. That’s what we did in social studies.
In ELA ( English Language Arts) we learned about different skills to read like comparing and predictions. Also we learned about seed writing where you traced your hand and you put things that remind you of stories that happened with your hand. That’s what we did in ELA.
This week for specials we had art, PE, library/tech and music. In art we finished our sugar skull project. Our sugar skulls are made from paper, but are also three D (3D) and colored with bright and vibrants symmetrical colors. In PE we went on a scavenger hunt hike. We went on a hike through the woods to find ghost skulls and day or the dead skulls. If you and your family have nothing to do for Halloween, you are able to take a hike like we did in PE! After Halloween weekend decorations will be taken down. In the library and tech we learned about digital citizenship. We played games to help us realize the dangers on the internet. That’s what we do in our specials.
In math this week we started module one. Our main focus the past week has been multiplying and dividing decimals. We have been working with place value charts. A place value chart is a chart with places like (hundredths, tenths, ones, tens, hundreds, etc.). We also started our eureka math book. We also learned about thousandths and how they work. That’s what we did in math.
We have been eating eating lunch in the cafeteria. When we asked our classmates, they agreed that the food is better than last year but that, "the hand sanitizer smells awful. It smells like rotten cheese and fruit that has been dragged through the mud."
In Activity Period we finish any work that we didn’t finish during the day or some kids have zooms with other teachers.
In SEL (social emotional learning) we learned about empathy and respect. This week we learned that empathy/being empathetic is very important to show to others. Respect is also very important to show to others and yourself. That’s what we did in SEL.
That’s what we did this week!

Thank you to Ava and Grace who have been working so hard to get this weekly update finished. Read below to hear about one of our early hybrid weeks from their perspective. They did such a great job!
Weekly update!
By: Ava Berthiaume and Grace Parenti

Last week we went on a hike and used our five senses to hear, taste, see, feel, and smell to observe the nature around us! Our first stop was the platform to sit and write! Next it was off to the stream, where we hopped on rocks and observed the stream flowing with water! And unfortunately Nick and Jay got stung by wasps! The rest of us started walking to the lake where we saw swans and continued writing about our five senses! Later we started our long walk back to school and there our awesome nature hike ended!!!🍂

We also wrote our own fall poems tied to the hike. It was so much FUN exploring in nature. We wrote about fall and our five senses and once again we added pictures too. And now they are all hanging on the “fridge!” 🍁

And for math this week we did our Figure Me Outs! For that we had to write about numbers that are important to us like I have 5x1 people in my family or 6x6-1 pets. They came out spectacular!📓

During ELA we are reading a book called: Out Of My Mind. We really like the book.. It has a lot of character and it shows how a girl goes through life in a harder way.

And that was our weekly update! Hope you liked it!

                                                              Sincerely, Grace and Ava!

Back at the Pond!

It was SO GREAT to have our Fireflies back in our school and classrooms this week. In our mini cohorts, we were able to start building our classroom community, to spend some time out in nature, to read some good books, and to do fun activities like comparing ideas to bubbles. Who doesn't love bubbles?

Thank you for sending us your children with a good understanding of how to keep themselves and their friends safe at school.  They are all doing a wonderful job with the new safety rules and I am so impressed with their resilience - it's hard to keep physical distance from your friends and to wear a mask all day!

Below are some pictures from our first four in-person learning days. I actually loved having the students come the first week in such small groups because I feel like I got to know a whole lot about each of my students and make good connections right away - I hope they felt the same :) I'm looking forward to another great week next week... and hopefully some hiking!

A fabulous first day!

Even though this was a very strange way to kick off our school year, today was a fabulous first day! I really enjoyed meeting and getting to know a lot of fun things about our A-010ers. It was a long day after so many months away, and I was really impressed by our class - they did a wonderful job being kind and welcoming to one another, patient with technology issues, and engaged in all of the activities.

In the afternoon we joined with Mrs. Kewriga and Mrs. O'Leary's class to work in groups and get to know the other Firefly students a bit better. We listened to a read aloud of the book, I am Human, by Susan Verde. We then met in breakout rooms to find similarities amongst ourselves and used those similarities to create Jamboard displays. Check out the slideshow with the students' work below - they are so creative!
